**One Step Ahead** is a gritty blues-rock road song about a restless drifter who has made an art form out of leaving before trouble catches up with him. With money in his boot, mud on his jeans and another town disappearing in the rear-view mirror, he lives by instinct, distrust and his own set of rules.
The lyrics paint a dusty landscape of back roads, cheap motels, gas stations, distant sirens and half-reliable sightings of a man who is always somewhere else by the time anyone comes looking. There is swagger in the story, but also weariness: sleeping with one eye open, carrying broken schemes and accepting the bruises that come with a life spent constantly moving.
The repeated **“One step ahead”** gives the song its natural driving hook, while the bridge turns the outlaw attitude almost philosophical. The hard road isn't something the narrator is trying to escape anymore — it is the life he has chosen. Even if the moon itself puts on a badge, he intends to keep moving.
Built for a rough-edged blues-rock groove, **One Step Ahead** combines outlaw storytelling, road-worn imagery and a streak of dark humor into a song about freedom at any cost.
By the time you think you've caught up with him, he's already in the wind.

Lyrics
I keep my name in my hat
And my money in my boot
Back roads know my tires
Gravel singing the truth
I don’t stay where I’m wanted
I don’t knock twice, no way
If the porch light starts to twitch
I’m already far away
Hear that siren roll
Past the gas station bend
I learned how to vanish
Before the trouble begins
One step ahead
One step ahead
I’m gone before they read my name
One step ahead
One step ahead
I live by my own rules, babe (my own rules)
Motel ash in my ashtray
Mud on the hem of my jeans
I sleep with one eye open
And a pack of broken schemes
The radio says my shadow
Was seen down by the creek
But I was three towns over
With a cold beer and a leak
Hear that siren cry
Like a wolf on the wind
I learned how to slip through
Where the clean hands can’t begin
One step ahead
One step ahead
I’m gone before they read my name
One step ahead
One step ahead
I live by my own rules, babe (my own rules)
If the moon puts on a badge
I’ll still keep moving on
I’ve made peace with the hard road
And the bruises I’ve worn
Let them chase their empty hours
Let them search my tracks in vain
I was born to break the fence line
And dance out in the rain
One step ahead
One step ahead
I’m gone before they read my name
One step ahead
One step ahead
I live by my own rules, babe (my own rules)
Yeah, one step ahead
Still one step ahead
You can call my number
I’m already in the wind
